Writing and using symbols is from all time. In the far far far history stones and walls have been found with writing and drawings on it. It always has been used as a kind of language.
Before the time-area of typing on type-machines and keyboards, we wrote with a pen on paper. Not everyone could write. If you were able to write, that meant you were lucky, because you were given the posibility to learn.
We all remember the typographical, which meant the writing became a bit sloppy. A welcome invention became Tipex, which allowed us to make a clerical. Writing job letters could be very stressfull.
Time is money. So we type fast, faster then we exactly are able too. And for me that means I write new created words. Ones that make me grin, or sometimes blossom my cheeks...
